The War of 1812 "Mercental" and A Regency "Austen-tagious" Gathering (Toronto Ont, Oct)

We recently attended another 1812 Regency era event. It is always great fun to whiz back in time and learn more about history.

Re-enacting is a great family activity..
                           (visit Ruth's Blog: http://niagara1812.blogspot.com/ )
and it helps the young to learn more!

Later that evening we gathered for a Jane Austen lecture
at a wonderful museum in Stoney Creek

A Golden Chain
by Helen Steiner Rice

Friendship is a Golden Chain,
The links are friends so dear,
And like a rare and precious jewel
It's treasured more each year...

It's clasped together firmly
With a love that's deep and true,
And it's rich with happy memories
and fond recollections, too...

Time can't destroy its beauty
For, as long as memory lives,
Years can't erase the pleasure
That the joy of friendship gives...

For friendship is a priceless gift
That can't be bought or sold,
But to have an understanding friend
Is worth far more than gold...

And the Golden Chain of Friendship
Is a strong and blessed tie
Binding kindred hearts together
As the years go passing by.

  5. I cannot imagine going for more than a couple of days without a computer, but then, I cannot imagine life without a camera...so I'm not sure what I would have picked. The costumes are stunning, the long red cape is just gorgeous and I love the older lady in the full spotted dress and bonnet - there must be yards of material in there.

  8. I thought you had taken an extended holiday leave. Sorry for your computer and camera trouble. I liked seeing your photographs. How fabulous it would be take part in a country dance - a dream of mine. The dotted swiss white gown "for sale?" was charming - just like one I was contemplating trying to sew to go with a short stay I found on the pages of "Jane Austen Knits" pattern magazine.
    The poem is sweet.
Thank your for your efforts in keeping in touch.

  11. Well thank heaven for the library! Both of our computers crashed last year. Nice to see you again Linnie. What a grand time you had re-enacting. Do you ever feel like you were born into the wrong century? I do!

  12. Dear Linnie,

I was SO HAPPY to see your comment the other day, and I'm so happy to know that all is well (other than computer/camera crashes, of course).

You all look so dapper and dashing and delightful in your costumes, and what a lovely place for learning! We have a Jane Austen Society here, but they seem to do most of their outings on Sunday, alas.

    Love,

    Marqueta
