Windfall Apples and Apple Press Part 2

Before we took our vacation in October in Vermont,
we wanted to make use of the many windfall apples
left behind in the huge orchard behind our home

We were so excited to try our
 antique apple/grape press,
and Mommy who is 91 was
so happy to join us!

It was great fun!!

"Lottie!! Leave our apples alone"!!

(Grandma always on the "spoil")!

We had to chop the apples
because the grinder was
 actually meant for grapes!!

But this hundred year old
piece of equipment still worked as new!!

And the fruit of our labor was
plentiful
 refreshing
and delectable!!

There were plenty more apples to enjoy
so delicious deserts and cannings were made!

Drying is easy and useful

After Apple Picking
But I was well
Upon my way to sleep before it fell,
And I could tell
What form my dreaming was about to take.
Magnified apples appear and disappear,
Stem end and blossom end,
And every fleck of russet showing clear.
My instep arch not only keeps the ache,
It keeps the pressure of a ladder-round.
I feel the ladder sway as the boughs bend.
And I keep hearing from the cellar bin
The rumbling sound
Of load on load of apples coming in.
For I have had too much
Of apple-picking: I am overtired
Of the great harvest I myself desired.
There were ten thousand thousand fruit to touch,
Cherish in hand, let down, and not let fall.
For all
That struck the earth,
No matter if not bruised or spiked with stubble,
Went surely to the cider-apple heap
As of no worth.
One can see what will trouble
This sleep of mine, whatever sleep it is.
Were he not gone,
The woodchuck could say whether it’s like his
Long sleep, as I describe its coming on,
Or just some human sleep.    Robert Frost

  2. teehee....this is FUN! LINNIE, I wish I could visit your farm! I would pet and play with all your animals...that Lottie looks like a handleful of fun and the pups and that PARROT! Who is that, pray tell? And of course the Mousekins' own sweet blend of cider...Tea Rat asks, "Is it hard cider?" teeehehehee

  5. LINNIE! OK, now Tea Rat says he will jump in his horse drawn carriage and properly transport himself and Rattus to your farm, for a swig of the GOOD STUFF: hard cider. You know he has his Th.D in teaology, and did a few minors in barista theory and hard ciders. I suspects your batch will be of superior quality, so off he goes through snow drift and dale, to be with his friends, THE MOUSEKINS! teeeheee.....have you been to Nowhere? Tea Rat has started his Christmas decorations while the rest of the gang would rather sit in the Wit's End library and read themselves to sleep.

BE WELL and oh, stay safe in all that snow! XOXOXOX

  6. Linnie,
That is my idea of a perfect day! I loved all the photos of your old fashioned apple cider press. How fun to have the goats eagerly awaiting some treats too...LOL! I bet the folks you gift a jar of that loveliness to will be quite appreciate. What is the apple receipt name for the one you added cranberries to? Tasha would have loved to spend the day at your place helping out:-)
    Take Peace,
    Suzanne

  7. Love this post!
Our reenacting unit bought a cider press this year and we had a harvest celebration in October.
What fun it was, and the visitors loved it.
I did write a posting about it around a month ago - not sure if you saw it or not.
Anyhow, thanks so much for this post.

  9. Apples are one of those things that there is no waste {I like that} and I do love your antique presses. Don't you find that the simpler something is the less complicated it is so the less likelihood of things going wrong? Technology is wonderful, but the old ways are often the best.
I think your Mom is wonderful! Lovely to see her joining in, and helping you enjoy the fruits of your labour!

  16. Dearest Linnie, I happened upon your comment that you left on my older post, and I am so grateful for such a connection to you! I wish you as well, a happy and lush Thanksgiving celebration!!!! I suspect given you are a few hours ahead of me here that you either have had your meal or about to; we eat late here (about 6:00 our time) and it has been such a fun and creative day.

God bless you dear friend - much love from this wild and crazy place we call home (Tea Rat sends his love to the mousekins!)
