the Apothocary

In a room..
hidden off in a quiet corner...

...lies the
APOTHECARY ....

....filled with aromas,
 dried herbs and flowers,
roots and oils....
a place to spend hours..

packed with books and formulas...

...a place of collections and travels,
                                            of imaginations,
                                                        and explorations,
                                        of memories and marvels...

...a place to study..
     to meditate...

and to dream and plan...
 to ponder and HOPE

Rejoicing in hope;
 patient in tribulation;
continuing instant in prayer;
                                        Romans 12:12

And the Lord said unto Moses,
Take unto thee sweet spices, stact, and onycha
and galbanum; these sweet spices with pure Frankincense
of each shall there be
a like weight:And thou shalt make it a perfume,
a confection after the art of apothecary,
 tempered together, pure and holy:
And thou shalt beat some of it very small, and
put it before the testimony in The Tabernacle of the  congregation,
where I will meet with thee:
It shall be unto you most holy.
And as for the perfume which thou shalt make,
ye shall not make to yourselves according
to the composition thereof:
it shall  be unto thee holy for The Lord.
                                                                               (Exodus 30:34-37)

The old apothecary's shop is a wonderous place
With boxes, tins and jars filling the shelves
And an battered chest of drawers full of marvellous smells
There's one bay window in which stand
Four of those strange tall tapered bottles
Green, blue, red and amber
In a cupboard and under the counter,
He reluctantly keeps a few modern items
For his more regular customers
Such as cotton wool, tissues, asprin and alka selters
He'll assure you he can mix you a cure
For almost anything from baldness to an ingrowing toenail
But if you were to look in the room
Which is in the back of the shop
Where he measures and grinds up the natural ingredients
Rather hidden away upon one shelf
Is a copy of the book entitled
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

  3. Hi Martha Ellen, (I just came over from your place )
I was fortunate to bring my hobby studies of Herbs and natural foods in the seventies to a Natural Health store for many years in the 80s and 90s, it was one of my most favorite places to work and learn :-D

  4. Linnie, I could spend the day exploring your house! I love your collection of jars and that lace curtain! And your dishes! What is that pattern in the built-in hutch? And all your dried herbs in the hanging baskets. And the angel wings on the Corgi made from hearts--love that idea. Even your mouse family has an apothecary!

  5. Hi Cathy thank you :-)
It is actually a very teeny room off of the dinning room. The dishes in the hutch are mostly English pink lustreware that I was blessed to have inherited from my English Great Grandmama! Happy St Valentines :-)

  8. Just beautiful - I recognize the book "All Good Things Around Us' as it's on my bookshelf too. And could you tell me a bit about the lovely flowery lampshade - the hexagon shaped one. My mother had a couple of lampshades very similar and sadly, they were sold. Do you know what they are called? Thanks for a wonderful look at your lovely room.

  11. I am FINALLY HERE!

Oh Linnie, your home...so cozy and perfectly old, upstate New York feel...what I always dreamed of as a child. The books, the jars, the art, the baskets, all so warm and built with a history behind them. What gentle hands handled these jars, what fingers flipped the pages of this lovely books? Every room of your home speaks a poetry unknown to my ears...and then there's the MOUSEKINS and AUNT TILLY! I SEE HER! teeeeheheee....Tea Rat would love to spend a summer weekend in your lovely neck of the woods, picking apples (oops, that is for fall!).

That darling corgi with the angels' wings....I want to play. teeeeee

Happy Valentine's Day dearest sister! Anita

And the Mousekins and you have finally finished the laundry room? Then wash day will be all the more sweet for you all! Do the Mousekins hang their linens in the cool wind on the line? Tea Rat does...though he wears no clothing, he hands out RATTUS'S underwear in the sun! teeeeeeee

  20. Linnie, I love your apothecary, let me count the ways: Framed dragonflies (why didn't I think of that?) the Victorian bug collection boxes, the little skulls in jars, all those great vintage books, the drying herbs, the curtains ( yes, I have those too!) and the cabinet full of little drawers. It is really wonderful. I wonder if I have a small corner somewhere in this house to make an apothecary, hmmm. I will find one for sure. Jeri
